Maggie's letter to Drums Along The Mohawk:
Since marching the 2018 season with the Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle corps, I have learned more valuable life lessons that I had ever expected. Jersey Surf taught me the true meaning of family by surrounding me with a welcoming atmosphere filled with the most inspirational people. The energy that exuded from the corps was almost palpable when everyone’s full force and energy was being put into the show ... The most amazing part is that this feeling was not just restricted to the stadiums, in fact, it most often occurred on the rehearsal field. Last year for the 2018 season, I was the Legacy Award winner in memory of Michele Owens. During the December camp, doing a trick on rifle caused me to over rotate my wrist and tear the TFCC ligament. I was absolutely devastated because there was a chance that I would not be able to march the 2019 season ... (Maggie’s recovery was explained in her essay. She endured an immobilizing 6-8 weeks with a full arm cast, months of physical therapy and time to re-learn using her wrist.) Finally, all of my hard work and dedication paid off when my doctor released me to spin a month earlier than when I was expected to ... I am overjoyed that I can march for the 2019 season. DCI has given me the strength physically and mentally to face all difficult situations in my life.
Recommendation: Danielle Edgington, Southern Tier Winterguard Director
I have known Maggie for 2 years and was delighted to serve as her director/instructor of the Southern Tier Winterguard program. During that time, I have watched Maggie grow into an outstanding individual who excels in both performance and leadership pursuits….She not only led us to win a gold medal last year ….but kept the team together as a whole with her motivation, drive and determination. Her strong work ethic is like no other. Her technical capabilities are beyond her years and she is well loved by her peers as well as all those who have had the pleasure of teaching her.
